Why Marta Kostyuk Only Shakes Hands with One Russian Player
Marta Kostyuk’s Statement
According to Главком: Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk has clarified her stance on post-match handshakes, explaining that Daria Kasatkina is the only Russian player she greets in this way. Kostyuk emphasized that this decision stems from Kasatkina’s public opposition to the war in Ukraine. This distinction is significant in a sport where political gestures have become increasingly visible.
“The only person I shake hands with is Daria Kasatkina, because she didn’t just change her passport-she openly stated she does not support the war, and so on. That’s why I and the other girls decided to shake her hand-out of respect,” Kostyuk said.
She also noted that while many tennis players have switched nationalities, none of them have spoken out against the war or in support of Ukraine.
Tournament Success
At the WTA 1000 event in Madrid, Kostyuk continues to show top-tier form. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Czech player Linda Nosková 7–6, 6–0. The first set was tightly contested, with Kostyuk winning the tiebreak 7–1, before she dominated the second set without dropping a single game, closing it out 6–0.
Additionally, seven Ukrainian women’s tennis players have qualified for the main draw of the 2026 French Open, scheduled from May 24 to June 7. These athletes include:
- Elina Svitolina
- Marta Kostyuk
- Dayana Yastremska
- Yuliia Starodubtseva
- Oleksandra Oliynykova
- Anhelina Kalinina
- Daria Snigur
This tournament represents a major milestone for Ukrainian players competing on the global stage.
Kostyuk’s remarks highlight not only her personal convictions but also the growing role of moral values in sports amid the war in Ukraine. Her refusal to shake hands with certain opponents has become a powerful symbol of solidarity with her country and its people. Meanwhile, her strong performances-especially in Madrid-reflect her professionalism and determination, qualities that could inspire other Ukrainian athletes in their international competitions.
As Kostyuk continues to make headlines with her principled stance, it's worth noting her recent achievement of securing five consecutive match victories without losing a single set. This remarkable feat not only showcases her skill on the court but also reflects her growing confidence amid the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian athletes.
