Deepening Ukraine-Germany Cooperation

According to Кабмін: Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky held talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss expanding collaboration between the two nations amid Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia and its ambitions for European integration. Their discussions covered key sectors including the economy, defense, energy, transportation, and healthcare, with a particular focus on bolstering Ukraine’s military resilience.

Koretsky highlighted that imports from Germany to Ukraine surged from €5.4 billion in 2021 to over €9.3 billion projected for 2025. Chancellor Merz announced a significant military and energy support package exceeding €1.3 billion to aid Ukraine.

“We prioritized strengthening air defense systems to protect our citizens, businesses, and civilian infrastructure from Russian terrorist attacks. I am grateful to Chancellor Merz for the announcement of this extensive military and energy assistance worth more than €1.3 billion,” Koretsky emphasized.

Future Collaboration Plans

With intensifying Russian aggression and rising war costs, Ukraine faces financial challenges for 2026–2027. Both sides agreed to broaden cooperation in energy and transport sectors. Planned initiatives include procuring German equipment to restore and modernize Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as well as acquiring locomotives to replace those lost by Ukrzaliznytsia due to Russian strikes.

“We committed to expanding mutually beneficial partnerships in energy and transportation,” Koretsky stressed.

The discussion also focused on medical cooperation, particularly knowledge exchange between healthcare professionals and hospitals. Ukraine and Germany aim to combine Germany’s expertise in civilian medicine with Ukraine’s frontline medical experience from the war. Key areas of joint medical work include:

  • Establishing a unified trauma registry
  • Updating medical protocols
  • Advancing prosthetics

“I thanked Germany for its steadfast support of Ukraine’s European integration. We anticipate opening all negotiation clusters soon and are doing everything necessary to make that happen. We deeply value Germany’s consistent leadership in assisting and standing with Ukraine. Thank you, Chancellor!” Koretsky concluded.

This meeting underscores the strategic partnership between Ukraine and Germany during a critical time of ongoing conflict, as Ukraine continues its path toward European integration. The agreements signed and assistance packages announced are poised to significantly strengthen Ukraine’s economic stability and defense capabilities, crucial in the face of escalating threats from Russia.
