Kyiv Region's Liberation on April 1, 2022

According to Главком: On April 1, 2022, Ukrainian military forces achieved a pivotal milestone in the Battle for Kyiv by liberating a series of settlements in the Kyiv region. This operation marked a decisive shift in the conflict's early phase, demonstrating Ukraine's capacity to repel a much larger invading force. Ukrainian troops entered Borodianka, re-establishing control over the area. That same day, a full clearance operation concluded in Bucha, ending a 33-day occupation and removing the last remnants of enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups. By this point, 95% of the Kyiv region had been freed from Russian control.

Defense forces also liberated over 15 settlements in the Vyshhorod district, including Dymer. Officially, Ukrainian soldiers entered the territory of the Antonov Airport in Hostomel. There, they discovered dozens of units of destroyed and abandoned enemy equipment, including BMDs, BTRs, and trucks.

Recollections from Participants

Accounts from those who witnessed the airport's condition reveal the scale of the destruction.

'When we drove onto the Antonov grounds, there was a dead silence. Everywhere-scorched metal, shattered Russian airborne vehicles, and... our Mriya. You know, we'd all seen it in photos, but standing next to that mutilated giant was physically painful,' noted a fighter from a special unit with the call sign 'Arni.'

Furthermore, soldiers reported on the occupiers' hasty retreat, during which they abandoned weapon caches.

'The occupiers fled from here so fast they left behind warehouses full of weapons. We found their automatic rifles, dry rations, even stolen washing machines they didn't have time to load. They understood that if we cut the road to Ivankiv, they would all be trapped here. On April 1, we understood: they were no longer a force near Kyiv. That was the day we cleared our land of this trash,' he added.

The initial assault by the enemy was borne by several villages:

  • Blystavytsia
  • Syniak
  • Havrylivka
  • Zdvizhivka
  • Liubianka
  • Myrotske

Thanks to the efforts of the Ukrainian military, the territory of the Kyiv region was gradually liberated from the occupiers. April 1, 2022, became a landmark date in Ukraine's struggle for independence and the restoration of control over its native land.

These events constituted a critical step in Ukraine's fight for territorial integrity and sovereignty. Regaining control of the Kyiv region demonstrated the effectiveness of Ukrainian defense forces and served as a signal for further mobilization of efforts in the struggle against the occupation. The liberation of these settlements not only boosted the morale of Ukrainian troops but also altered the strategic situation on the front, opening new possibilities for subsequent operations.

As Ukrainian forces continued their successful operations, the intense 33-day struggle for Bucha played a crucial role in the overall strategy to reclaim the Kyiv region. This counteroffensive not only highlighted the resilience of Ukrainian troops but also underscored the significance of coordinated efforts in the liberation of occupied territories.
