This date commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol nearly four decades ago, a landmark treaty that laid the foundation for global efforts to phase out substances harmful to the ozone layer. This vital atmospheric shield safeguards Earth by filtering out excessive ultraviolet radiation.

The United Nations Environment Programme highlights that the Montreal Protocol has generated enormous benefits worldwide, estimating health-related gains valued at $1.8 trillion. Ukraine has actively participated in these initiatives, having ratified the Montreal Protocol along with four of its amendments. The country’s next environmental milestone is the ratification of the Kigali Amendment, aimed at reducing the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), potent greenhouse gases.

Hydrofluorocarbons, commonly found in refrigerators and air conditioners, contribute significantly to global warming. It is essential for consumers to select appliances that use safer refrigerants and to maintain this equipment properly to prevent refrigerant leaks.
