Ukraine to Implement Hourly Power Cuts Starting February 18

Power outages in Ukraine: what is happening
В Україні запровадять погодинні відключення електроенергії з 18 лютого.

Hourly Electricity Blackouts Scheduled Across Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine will introduce scheduled hourly electricity blackouts and restrictions for industrial consumers starting February 18. This measure is a direct response to Russian missile and drone attacks on the country's energy infrastructure, which caused significant power outages in several regions. A series of strikes overnight on February 16 and into the morning of February 17 left many consumers without power in the Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv regions. These attacks are part of a wider campaign targeting Ukraine's civilian energy grid, especially during winter.

Consequences and Official Guidance

According to Ukrenergo, the national energy company, the hourly blackouts will be implemented in all regions of Ukraine throughout the day. Industrial consumers will also face scheduled power capacity limits. As of the morning of February 17, the national electricity consumption level had already dropped by 5.9% compared to the previous day. Ukrenergo urges citizens to check the official websites of their regional power distributors for specific outage schedules affecting their addresses.

Furthermore, Ukrenergo recommends that households delay using high-power appliances until after 11:00 PM to help balance the strained grid.

The introduction of scheduled blackouts highlights the critical state of Ukraine's energy sector, which has been severely damaged by external aggression. This decision aims to stabilize the national power system and ensure a more predictable supply of electricity despite limited resources. Both citizens and businesses are advised to follow the energy operators' instructions to mitigate the impact of the outages and contribute to more efficient energy use during this challenging period.
