After 10 Days on the Waiting List, an 18-Year-Old Ukrainian Receives a New Heart
Successful Heart Transplant in Lviv
According to Главком: In Lviv, surgeons successfully transplanted a heart into 18-year-old Maksym Kolos, who suffered from heart failure caused by dilated cardiomyopathy. This operation was his only chance at survival, as his heart had become too stretched and weak to pump blood effectively. The donor was a 23-year-old man from the Volyn region who died from a brain hemorrhage.
Maksym Kolos, originally from the Lviv region, grew up in the resort town of Slavske. Two months ago, he began experiencing health issues, including swelling in his limbs and severe shortness of breath. After a thorough examination, doctors diagnosed him with heart failure and placed him on the donor heart waiting list. A suitable donor emerged after just 10 days. Despite the fact that Maksym's father-who has been defending the country since the start of the full-scale invasion-was scheduled to return to the front near Zaporizhzhia that same day, the command allowed him to stay.
Post-Surgery Feelings
After the operation, Maksym shared his emotions:
“I wasn’t afraid. I felt joy, happiness, and faith. Of course, there was also a sense of uncertainty. Now I have a bright future ahead and confidence in my recovery. I want to get back to sports and soon start my own business.”
Another remarkable story is that of veteran Yurii Mykytenchuk, who received a new heart after enduring severe hardships in Russian prisons. Upon returning home, his heart was functioning at only 10%, and he spent 33 days on an ECMO machine before receiving a donor organ as a gift for his anniversary.
These stories highlight the critical importance of organ donation and the capabilities of modern medicine in saving lives under difficult circumstances.
Successful heart transplants, such as those of Maksym Kolos and Yurii Mykytenchuk, not only showcase the achievements of Ukrainian medicine but also underscore the vital role of organ donation in saving lives. These cases reflect the real-life challenges faced by patients dealing with serious medical conditions and demonstrate how the efforts of medical professionals and the willingness of people to become donors can change destinies. Given the growing need for donor organs, these stories can serve as a powerful incentive for society to support and promote organ donation in Ukraine.
The importance of organ donation is further highlighted by the inspiring cases of individuals who have received life-saving transplants. For instance, three Ukrainians were given a new lease on life thanks to the selfless act of a stroke victim's family who donated her organs. This story underscores the profound impact that such decisions can have on multiple lives, similar to the journey of Maksym Kolos.
