Power Supply Restrictions in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine will implement electricity supply restrictions across most of its regions for a full 24-hour period starting February 21. This measure is a direct response to a significant power deficit within the national energy grid. The primary cause of this shortage is the extensive damage inflicted by Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, which has severely compromised the stability of the power supply.

As of the morning of February 20, electricity consumption levels had risen by 2.9% compared to the previous day. Compounding the crisis, severe weather has left 40 settlements without power in the Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Furthermore, ongoing hostilities have resulted in new damage to power networks in the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia regions. These restrictions highlight the ongoing strain on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, which has been a repeated target since the full-scale invasion began.

The press service of NEC Ukrenergo warns: 'Attention! The situation in the energy system is subject to change. For the specific timing and scope of power cuts affecting your address, please consult the official pages of your regional power distribution company (oblenergo).'

Ukrenergo is also urging consumers to use electricity sparingly during the hours it is available according to the published schedules.

A Complex Energy Crisis

The imposition of these restrictions underscores the complex energy crisis facing Ukraine, driven by both military aggression and adverse weather conditions. This situation reflects the persistent challenges confronting the country's power grid and the critical need to maintain supply stability. Consumers are advised to stay informed of updates to outage schedules and to use power rationally to help alleviate the burden on the network.
