Seamless Handover from Ground Station to Satellite Tested with Smartphone on October 21
Testing Satellite-to-Ground Network Transition
According to НВ — Техно: On October 21, near the town of Granite Falls in Washington state, a groundbreaking test was conducted to switch communication from a traditional ground-based cellular station to a low-Earth orbit satellite using a standard smartphone. This successful trial marks a significant advance in maintaining uninterrupted calls and data transfers, eliminating dropped connections during active sessions.
Breakthroughs in Connectivity Technology
During the demonstration, a regular smartphone seamlessly transitioned from a conventional base station to a low-orbit satellite. Thanks to innovative algorithms, the handover time between terrestrial and satellite networks decreased dramatically from several seconds to mere milliseconds. Ericsson developed the network equipment and automation systems for AT&T, while Nokia provided the radio modules and specialized software for satellite operation. The communication relies on BlueBird satellites from AST SpaceMobile, equipped with antenna arrays capable of transmitting and receiving standard 4G and 5G cellular signals over vast distances.
This technology supports everyday smartphones without requiring SIM card changes or manual adjustments, enhancing user convenience. Although the test was a success, the companies involved have yet to announce a commercial rollout date for the general public.
"This test represents a historic milestone in overcoming coverage dead zones," said Robert Walters.
The ability to switch smoothly from ground networks to satellite links opens new possibilities for communication, especially in remote and underserved areas. Given the increasing reliance on mobile connectivity worldwide, such innovations have the potential to significantly improve service quality where traditional networks are limited. The industry awaits the commercial launch that will bring these advancements to everyday consumers.
