This initiative was launched by the City of Kindness Foundation in partnership with the children's hospice 'House of Butterflies.' The day draws inspiration from the story of 10-year-old Marichka, who courageously fought brainstem cancer. Her heartfelt wish was for people worldwide to draw butterflies for her-a symbol that now represents the cause and aims to draw society’s attention to children needing palliative care while encouraging organizations to offer their support.

Origins and Purpose of the Day

Butterfly Day was established four years ago during the preparations to open the 'House of Butterflies' hospice, which was named in honor of Marichka. This hospice provides palliative care for children with severe conditions, offering specialized support such as:

• ventilator assistance,
• feeding through gastrostomy,
• pain management and continuous adult supervision.

Children receiving palliative care deserve dignity, compassion, and the chance to fulfill their dreams.

Success stories from the 'House of Butterflies' highlight the critical impact of this work. For example, Danylo from Kherson, who has cerebral palsy and was evacuated under shelling, took his first steps at the hospice and has since started first grade. Anya, abandoned by her parents, received treatment there and was eventually adopted. Another inspiring story is Gosha's, who lived in pain and fear but began responding to music at the hospice and found a new family after his adoptive mother completed preparations.

Looking ahead, the 'Butterflies of Hope – 2026' Summit is scheduled to take place in Chernivtsi from September 25 to 26. This event aims to further increase public understanding of children with serious illnesses and to foster partnerships that enhance palliative care support.

The City of Kindness Foundation encourages everyone to participate in activities supporting children in palliative care. Individuals and organizations can get involved by:

• changing their logos or profile pictures for the day to feature the Butterfly symbol,
• organizing themed events,
• raising funds for medications needed by the 'House of Butterflies.'

"We knew exactly who needed our dedicated and urgent help: among them was a girl named Marichka. She was just 10 years old, bravely fighting brainstem cancer. Amid her pain and tough treatments, she had one special wish-people around the world would draw butterflies for her," representatives of the City of Kindness Foundation shared.
