Investigation into the Counterfeit Biopatid Weight Loss Drug

Among those accused are the mastermind behind the illegal production, the owner of a Kyiv-based clinic, a customs broker, as well as laboratory staff, packers, and sales managers. The drug was marketed as containing the active ingredient tirzepatide but was sold without proper authorization, lacking official registration and certification.

Details of the Case

Investigations revealed that the primary raw material for Biopatid was imported from China, though its exact origin remains unclear. The customs broker misdeclared the shipment as a dietary supplement, allowing it to bypass quality inspections. The drug was produced in an underground lab where manufacturing standards were ignored. To promote sales, a dedicated website and social media pages were created, and sales managers were hired. Promotion targeted cosmetic clinics, medical centers, and doctors, enlisting influencers such as bloggers and actors to boost credibility.

Orders were shipped without maintaining the required temperature controls, compromising the product’s safety. The cost of raw materials per vial was approximately $17, while the finished product was sold for up to $1,200. Since the beginning of the year, those involved have reportedly earned over $5 million from this operation.

Law enforcement carried out more than 250 raids across Kyiv, Kyiv region, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Poltava, and other cities. Confiscated items included counterfeit Biopatid, raw materials, lab equipment, and computer hardware. Cash totaling nearly 15 million hryvnias in various currencies, luxury vehicles, and other assets were also seized. The clinic owner was aware of the drug’s illegality but continued to promote it among peers and on social media.

Investigators are currently tracing the raw material sources and identifying individuals potentially harmed by the drug’s use. The Office of the Prosecutor General and the Security Service of Ukraine are leading the inquiry.

This case highlights the critical role of law enforcement in combating the illegal trade of counterfeit medical products that pose serious health risks to consumers.

It also underscores the urgent need for stricter oversight of drug quality and production processes, especially as more people turn to uncertified weight loss remedies.
