A whole generation's eyesight is under threat

According to Radiotrek — Світ: Citing findings published by Radio Track, myopia among Generation Z has emerged as a serious public-health issue. Around 90 percent of adolescents in major cities now exhibit signs of nearsightedness. Specialists commonly point to always-on phone habits, long daily screen sessions, and environments with too little light as driving forces. One especially damaging habit is studying or working in a darkened room, with only the bright glow of a device illuminating the face.

Severe myopia can lead to serious vision problems, including an increased risk of retinal complications, glaucoma, and cataracts. To reduce the likelihood of developing or worsening myopia, specialists recommend a few straightforward practices:

  • Avoid working in the dark. Always use overhead lighting and supplement it with desk lamps, string lights, or other light sources.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look away from the screen for 20 seconds and focus on something about 6 meters away.
  • Keep proper distance from gadgets: hold a smartphone about 35–40 cm from your face, and place a monitor as far away as an arm's length.
  • Spend around 1.5–2 hours outdoors every day, even when it is cloudy.
  • Visit an ophthalmologist regularly to detect vision changes in time and take appropriate action.

This issue is becoming more pressing as digital devices grow even more central to the daily lives of young people. For this reason, parents and schools need to stay aware of the dangers and encourage healthy habits that can prevent myopia or slow its development. It is also worth promoting outdoor activities and less screen-focused leisure, as these measures can be a meaningful step toward preserving the vision of an entire generation.
