How Your Computer Boots Up

According to НВ — Техно: Starting a computer involves a complex sequence of steps that affect its speed and reliability. Initially, the system performs a hardware self-test, checking critical components such as the processor, RAM, and graphics card. Once these checks pass, the operating system’s essential files begin to load. The appearance of the manufacturer’s logo on the screen signals that this initial hardware verification was successful. When the power button is pressed, the motherboard quickly scans connected components, and the BIOS activates the display.

If the motherboard detects hardware faults, the screen remains blank without showing the logo. Common causes include static electricity buildup or temporary microcontroller glitches. To discharge static electricity, try the following steps:

  • Hold down the power button to force a shutdown;
  • Disconnect the charger and any peripheral devices;
  • Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.

If the screen still stays black after these steps, hardware issues such as oxidized RAM contacts, a depleted BIOS battery, or a damaged graphics chip due to overheating may be responsible.

Common Startup Problems

If the manufacturer’s logo appears but the system freezes during loading, one possible cause is an overloaded startup program list. Windows fast startup saves the kernel state to disk to speed up boot times, but this file can become corrupted by sudden shutdowns or a dying battery, causing the system to repeatedly try fixing broken entries during startup. Stuck system updates can also lead to similar freezes. To access the recovery menu, power off the laptop three times as soon as the first letters appear on the screen; on the fourth boot, a blue menu with Safe Mode options will open.

To improve boot speed, users can open Task Manager using Ctrl+Shift+Esc and disable unnecessary programs under the Startup tab. Turning off Windows fast startup via the Control Panel forces a full cold boot without cached data. Running the command sfc /scannow in the command prompt helps detect and repair corrupted system files.

It’s important to note that traditional magnetic hard drives (HDDs) degrade over time, developing bad sectors that slow down the computer. In contrast, solid-state drives (SSDs) offer significantly faster boot times-often around 15 seconds. By comparison, a worn-out HDD may take up to 10 minutes to start. Proper diagnostics and system optimization can greatly enhance laptop performance.

Understanding the boot process and the reasons behind system freezes or slow startups is essential for maintaining optimal device performance. Recognizing these issues allows users to take timely action, whether through hardware checks or software adjustments, ultimately ensuring smoother and faster computer operation.
