How tires affect fuel consumption: expert tips for savings

Incorrect tire pressure reduces fuel efficiency

Automobile tires have a significant impact on fuel consumption, but this is not always obvious to car owners. Along with the engine and driving style, tires can determine how often one needs to visit the gas station.

A service engineer in Kyiv explained that summer tires with an aggressive tread pattern increase rolling resistance. The same effect can be observed with off-road tires of the AT and MT categories. Winter tires with a soft rubber compound and numerous lugs also lead to increased fuel consumption.

"Wide or high tires increase the load on the car, so the tank empties faster," noted the expert.

Car owners with large rims also face this issue. There is a market for energy-efficient tires aimed at reducing rolling resistance.

The importance of choosing and maintaining tires correctly

Experts emphasize that choosing the wrong tires can significantly increase fuel consumption. A specialist from Poltava, Dmytro, noted: "Even replacing a set of tires can affect fuel consumption."

Besides tire selection, the condition of the suspension and braking system is crucial. When changing tires, it is important to check the wheel alignment, as improper alignment can lead to reduced range. Correct tire pressure is also essential, as insufficient pressure damages driving efficiency and reduces fuel savings.

Thus, proper selection and care of car tires can significantly influence fuel consumption levels and ultimately save money for the car owner.
