Memorial day of St. Ignatius the God-bearer
On December 20, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Ignatius the God-bearer, the Bishop of Antioch. According to legends, he received his name because the Savior Himself held him in His arms as a child and because he tirelessly 'carried God in his heart.' Ignatius was a disciple of the Apostle John the Theologian and led the Antiochian Church for many years, strengthening the faithful during times of persecution.
During the reign of Emperor Trajan, he was arrested for preaching Christianity. He was sent under guard to Rome, where he was to be executed in the Colosseum. Even in chains, Ignatius continued his mission, having written seven powerful letters to different churches, which are still considered gems of early Christian literature. In 107, he met a martyr's death - he was torn apart by lions, facing his fate with joy for Christ.
Prayers of the day
O, holy martyr Ignatius! Pray to the Merciful God for us, that He may strengthen our faith and grant us the powerful strength of spirit to resist the temptations of this world. Teach us to love the Lord just as sincerely and to carry Him in our hearts at all times. May we receive forgiveness of sins and grace for a righteous life through your intercession.
Amen
Folk beliefs and signs
Our ancestors believed that the signs of Ignatius' day help predict the future:
- If a strong hoarfrost appears on the trees, summer will be sunny and rich in harvest.
- A starry sky this evening foretells a good harvest for the next year.
- Hearing loud cawing of crows - to a prolonged snowstorm and severe frost.
- The weather on Ignatius will determine the entire next August.
To all who honor this holiday, we wish health, peace, and bright blessings!
