Aleksander Kwaśniewski Urges Europe to Sustain Support for Ukraine Amid Five-Year Conflict

A Call to Maintain Aid for Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Former Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski has appealed to European nations to continue their support for Ukraine as the conflict enters its fifth year, highlighting the limited willingness among Europeans to engage directly in combat. Speaking during a panel discussion on the Atlantic Council's YouTube channel, Kwaśniewski emphasized the ongoing threats posed by Russia and the critical financial demands facing Ukraine.

He reminded audiences that the war has lasted five years and represents a struggle for shared values and democracy.

“This prolonged five-year conflict is fought for our values, for democracy, and Ukraine is fighting it on our behalf. Ukrainians are battling instead of us, suffering instead of us, and are prepared to continue doing so,”

Kwaśniewski stated.

While Europeans remain supportive of Ukraine, he noted that they are not prepared to take up arms themselves. This underscores the urgent need for ongoing political, financial, and military assistance to Kyiv.

The Threat Posed by Russia

Kwaśniewski also warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to bring the entirety of Ukraine under Moscow’s influence and seeks to weaken NATO.

“Putin is not fighting for peace or ceasefire; his goal is to place all of Ukraine within Russia’s sphere of control,”

he explained.

Moreover, Russian propaganda in Europe is fueling a 'peace party' by promoting narratives focused on low fuel prices, while Moscow is counting on upcoming elections in Germany, France, and Poland to shift the political landscape.

A May survey by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) reveals that although 15 European countries support Ukraine, there is widespread reluctance to deploy troops-even for post-war peacekeeping missions. Kwaśniewski pointed out that Ukraine faces a shortfall of approximately $27 billion for defense funding through the end of the year. He stressed that Europeans’ readiness to risk their own lives remains genuinely limited. Nonetheless, he expressed confidence in Ukraine’s capabilities with modern military technology, saying, “Ukrainians are incredibly resilient, adaptable, and innovative when it comes to battlefield technology.”

Kwaśniewski’s remarks highlight the crucial role Europe plays in backing Ukraine amid persistent Russian aggression. Given Europeans’ limited appetite for direct military involvement-especially during election cycles-it is vital that Ukraine secures sustained financial and political support to bolster its defense. Continued European assistance could prove decisive in maintaining regional stability and countering Russian influence.
