New Therapy Targets Childhood Tooth Decay

The liquid is applied directly to infected spots on baby teeth, killing harmful bacteria while reinforcing the healthy tissue that remains. The study included 830 participants between the ages of one and six, all of whom had infected primary teeth.
Trial Outcomes and Next Steps
Six months after a single application, cavity progression had stopped in 54% of treated children, compared to only 22.5% in the placebo group. The procedure is painless and produces no serious side effects, though it temporarily darkens the treated cavity site. Since the method has currently only been tested on milk teeth, regulatory approval would be necessary before use expands beyond dental offices to routine pediatric checkups. Researchers see this as a way to prevent pain, complications, and invasive surgery under general anesthesia in young patients.
If approved, the silver diamine fluoride formulation could change how pediatric dentistry approaches early childhood caries, simplifying treatment and lowering anxiety for children. It may also reduce reliance on anesthesia and complex procedures across pediatric dental care.
