The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center warns of a severe cold snap on February 1. Nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to between -20°C and -25°C (-4°F to -13°F), with daytime highs only reaching -12°C to -17°C (10°F to 1°F). This is part of a significant winter weather system affecting the region. In southern oblasts, nighttime lows will range from -9°C to -14°C (16°F to 7°F), with daytime temperatures between -4°C and -9°C (25°F to 16°F). The regions of Prykarpattia, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Luhansk will see nighttime temperatures of -15°C to -20°C (5°F to -4°F) and daytime highs of -9°C to -14°C (16°F to 7°F).

Temperature Readings Across Different Regions

In Crimea and Zakarpattia, temperatures will be milder but still below freezing, ranging from -1°C to -6°C (30°F to 21°F) both day and night, with some areas in Zakarpattia potentially reaching around 0°C (32°F) during the day. No precipitation is forecast except in the southeastern part of the country, where light snow is possible overnight. Icy patches are expected on roads, prompting warnings for drivers to exercise caution. Winds will be predominantly northerly at 5-10 m/s (11-22 mph).

In the Kyiv region, nighttime temperatures will plunge to -20°C to -25°C (-4°F to -13°F), with daytime highs of -14°C to -19°C (7°F to -2°F). The capital city itself will experience lows of -21°C to -23°C (-6°F to -9°F) at night and highs of -14°C to -16°C (7°F to 3°F) during the day. Winds in Kyiv and the surrounding oblast will also be northerly at 5-10 m/s. The peak of this cold wave is forecast for the period from February 1 to February 3, 2026. In response to these dangerous conditions, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine has declared a Level III (red) danger alert for a number of oblasts.

The anticipated deep freeze is likely to significantly impact daily life, straining transportation networks and the energy grid. Residents are urged to follow rescue service guidelines and be extremely careful on roads due to black ice. The heightened danger level requires extra attention to safety, especially for outdoor workers or those planning travel. The situation also demands that emergency services remain on high alert to respond to any cold-related incidents.
