Marking the Centenary of Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom would have turned 100 on April 21st. Her remarkable 70-year reign was notable for fostering connections with the Ukrainian diaspora, reflecting a consistent interest in strengthening ties between the UK and Ukraine.

A Record of Engagement with the Ukrainian Community

The presence of Ukrainians in Britain was publicly acknowledged as early as June 2, 1953, when a group in national dress bearing a 'Ukraine' banner participated in her coronation procession in Reading. Later, on October 5, 1984, the Queen attended the opening of the Ukrainian Heritage Village in Manitoba, Canada, a landmark event for the community there. Her support was further formalized in 1977 during her Silver Jubilee, when she honored a representative of the UK's Ukrainian diaspora.

During her numerous visits to Canada, the Queen encountered Ukrainian culture directly. In 1982, she was greeted by the Shumka Ukrainian dance ensemble, which had also performed for her in 1978 during a visit to Vegreville, Alberta, where she was famously photographed before the giant Pysanka (Easter egg) monument. Her rapport with the community was also evident in the 1990s through photographs with Canada's Governor General, Ray (Roman) Hnatyshyn, a Ukrainian Canadian.

Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Elizabeth II made a personal donation to the UK's Disasters Emergency Committee, which was aiding Ukrainian refugees. Her long-standing view on regional stability was clear in a statement she endorsed, which emphasized:

“The United Kingdom will work for peace and security on Europe's borders, and for stable relations between Russia and Ukraine based on respect for national sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.” - Elizabeth II

Throughout her reign, Queen Elizabeth II consistently demonstrated support for the Ukrainian diaspora and highlighted Ukraine's significance on the world stage. Her actions helped shape the UK-Ukraine relationship and showed a sensitivity to the Ukrainian people's circumstances. In the face of current challenges like the ongoing war, the Queen's legacy provides a foundation for continued British cooperation with and support for Ukraine.

As we reflect on Queen Elizabeth II's profound impact, it's also worth exploring her extensive reign and personal life. Her 70 years on the throne were not only marked by significant public engagements but also by a deeply personal commitment to her family, as highlighted in our article about the Queen's marriage and lesser-known aspects of her life.
