Yuriy’s Kidney Transplant: A Life-Saving Gift
In March 2024, an 11-year-old boy named Yuriy from Lviv received a kidney from a 13-year-old teenager who died from a severe traumatic brain injury. Yuriy had been battling nephrotic syndrome since the age of four, and by the time he was nine, his kidneys had stopped functioning entirely. For the next three years, he underwent hemodialysis every other day, a grueling routine that underscored the critical nature of his condition. The donor’s parents consented to posthumous organ donation, and the organs they gave ultimately saved the lives of four children, including Yuriy.
Yuriy’s mother, Iryna, expressed deep gratitude to the donor’s family for their decision. She said:
“I am endlessly thankful to his parents for allowing the transplant and saving my child. We now consider that boy to be our second child, because a part of him lives on in my son.”
Before the surgery, Yuriy was restricted to drinking no more than 200 milliliters of fluid per day. After the successful transplant, he joyfully asked his mother: “Mom, water tastes so good! Can I really drink as much as I want now?” This simple question highlights how dramatically his life has changed since receiving the new organ.
The Crucial Role of Organ Donation
Another case illustrates similar challenges: eight-year-old Zakhar from the Ivano-Frankivsk region lived for six months without kidneys, relying on constant dialysis. In 2023, he received his first kidney transplant from his grandmother, but the new organ was damaged by disease, necessitating a second transplant.
Reflecting on her own perspective about donation, Yuriy’s mother noted:
“I am at peace with it because I understand that after death, God does not need my organs, but they can save someone’s life.”
This story underscores the profound importance of organ donation and its life-changing impact on children in urgent need of medical intervention.
Organ transplantation remains a vital component of modern medicine, especially for children suffering from severe illnesses. This case not only highlights the ethical significance of the decision to donate but also demonstrates its practical effects on patients and their families. In Ukraine, as in many other countries, ongoing discussions emphasize the need to raise awareness about donation and expand opportunities for those awaiting transplants.
Yuriy's journey is not unique; many children face similar life-threatening conditions requiring organ transplants. For instance, a mother’s courageous decision to donate part of her liver to save her 13-year-old daughter from Kharkiv highlights the profound impact of organ donation on families. These stories emphasize the critical need for awareness and support for organ donation, which can transform lives in desperate situations.
