The 112th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade
The 112th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has been introduced for the first time in an 8th-grade Ukrainian and World Literature textbook. The textbook includes the iconic painting "Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan" by Ilya Repin alongside a modern reinterpretation by French photographer Emeric Louisse, whose 2023 photo shoot featured soldiers from this brigade. This educational material draws a connection between today’s defenders and the historic Cossacks, preserving Ukraine’s legacy and honoring its protectors for future generations.
Brigade’s History and Impact
Established eight years ago, the 112th Brigade has played an active role in numerous military operations. Its members have:
- trained rigorously and engaged in combat;
- held strategic positions;
- liberated cities;
- defended the capital, Kyiv;
- operated on challenging fronts along border regions.
Alongside their combat duties, the brigade’s soldiers have documented their experiences through videos, social media posts, and film projects, enabling them to share their stories with a wider audience.
“This page in the school textbook carries special significance. Every year, new eighth graders, their parents, and teachers will open it. For each generation, the 112th Brigade will become more than just a name in the news—it will be part of their understanding of Ukraine and its modern history,” representatives of the brigade said.
By featuring the brigade in educational materials, the textbook serves as a vital resource that highlights the courage of Ukraine’s contemporary heroes who continue defending their homeland.
This initiative reflects the growing importance of recognizing the history and heroism of Ukraine’s current defenders amid ongoing conflict.
