A 13-Year-Old's Final Gift: Ivan's Organ Donation Saves Four Lives

Молодий герой: Іван, віддаючи свої органи, подарував шанси на життя чотирьом людям.

Ivan's Legacy: A Noble Act of Donation

Thirteen-year-old Ivan, who passed away from a severe traumatic brain injury, became an organ donor at the Ohmatdyt National Children's Specialized Hospital. His parents consented to the posthumous donation, granting four patients a chance at renewed life. Ivan was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of brain death, which led to this profoundly difficult decision. Organ donation remains a critical need in Ukraine, where such gifts can offer hope amidst tragedy.

Ivan's mother, Oksana, shared her perspective on the choice to donate:

'For years, I have followed the work of a doctor who performs transplants. When Ivan's father and I understood that what happened was irreversible, one of our first thoughts was donation. It feels to me like it was his choice… Ivan was always a very kind and generous boy. He is a warrior of light, a warrior of good.' Oksana, Ivan's mother

Her words underscore the profound significance and nobility of the parents' decision, who found the strength in their immense grief to help others.

A Corridor of Honor and Public Response

The hospital held a corridor of honor, where medical staff paid tribute to the boy's memory. This is not the first instance where organ donation has become a symbol of hope for those in need. For example, in July 2025, Liubov Andriievych participated in a corridor of honor at Ohmatdyt for her four-year-old daughter Veronika, who became a donor for three other children, demonstrating that life can continue even under the most tragic circumstances.

The public response to Ivan's story was heartfelt:

  • Natalia Kaleniuk remarked: 'Vania's parents now have four children to whom he gave life! A deep bow to them!'
  • Yevheniia Podobna expressed her deepest condolences to the parents and thanked them for their decision: 'Eternal memory to Ivan!'
  • Vita Hohol added that such stories 'break your heart all over again.'
  • Ania Kitty expressed hope that 'the four souls saved by this decision are praying for the boy's soul and for the well-being of his family.'

Condolences and support for Ivan's parents continue to pour in. Olha Rudenko noted: 'Immense gratitude to them for the lives of other people, but they gave away the most precious thing—the life of their child.' These words reflect a deep understanding of the difficulty of the parents' choice and recognition of their strength.

Thus, Ivan's story stands not only as a tragedy but also as an inspiring example of humanity and selflessness, encouraging others toward acts of kindness in difficult times.

This event highlights the vital importance of organ donation, which can save many lives in critical situations. Simultaneously, Ivan's story demonstrates how, in the darkest moments, parents can find the strength to make a decision that helps others. The need for donor organs in Ukraine remains urgent, and such cases can serve as an example for other families facing similar situations.
