Liver Transplant for Maria Momot
A 13-year-old girl from Kharkiv, Maria Momot, has successfully undergone a partial liver transplant in Lviv, with her mother acting as the living donor. This complex procedure marks the second organ transplant for Maria, who previously received a kidney from her father. Organ transplants from living relatives are a critical medical option in Ukraine, especially for pediatric patients.
Maria suffers from Caroli syndrome and polycystic kidney disease. Last year, she was hospitalized in critical condition due to a venous hemorrhage from her esophagus. According to nephrologist Liliia Hrytskiv from the St. Nicholas Children's Hospital, the bleeding was caused by esophageal varices resulting from portal hypertension—increased pressure in the portal vein. This life-threatening complication made further surgical intervention necessary.
The Surgical Procedure and Recovery
During the surgery, the left lobe of the donor's liver, along with the left gastric artery, was removed. Transplant surgeon Oleh Huzii explained that this was required to provide a vessel of sufficient length and diameter for Maria, as her own hepatic artery was too small, which could have led to post-operative complications. Despite the challenges, the surgery was successful, and while the recovery period has been difficult, her condition is now stable and managed by her medical team.
Maria's parents had initially hoped her condition would stabilize after the first transplant and that a liver transplant could be avoided. However, due to the severe complications, the decision was made to proceed with this second transplant. This case underscores the vital importance of organ donation and the crucial role of family support in treating severe illnesses. The resilience of families facing such medical journeys is often as remarkable as the surgical procedures themselves.
This case highlights the critical importance of organ transplantation, particularly in complex medical situations. For patients with serious conditions like Maria's, the opportunity to receive a donor organ can be a matter of survival. Such surgeries not only improve patients' quality of life but also require immense effort and support from family, which is a key factor in the recovery process.
The emotional journey of families facing medical crises often highlights the critical need for organ donations. Similar to Maria's story, a recent case involved a six-year-old boy who received a life-saving heart transplant, illustrating the profound impact of timely medical interventions.
