Mourning in Odesa and Nationwide Strikes: Ten Killed in Russian Attacks on Ukraine

Скорбота в Одесі та протестні акції по всій країні: десятки жертв внаслідок агресії Росії.

Odesa Declares Day of Mourning

Odesa has declared a day of mourning on April 16 following a series of Russian attacks that killed eight people in the city and two more in Dnipro. The assaults, which occurred between 7:00 AM on April 15 and 7:00 AM on April 16, involved multiple waves of missile and drone strikes targeting the city. Similar attacks were also recorded in the capital, Kyiv, and in Kharkiv. These strikes are part of a broader pattern of intensified attacks on Ukrainian urban centers.

Ukrainian national flags and Odesa city flags, adorned with black mourning ribbons, have been lowered to half-mast across the city. Local authorities have recommended that businesses and organizations limit the use of music and refrain from holding entertainment events.

"The Odesa city government honors the memory of the deceased and expresses its sincere condolences to the families and loved ones," an official statement said.

Strike on Dnipro

In Dnipro, victims of the attack sustained head injuries, shrapnel wounds, and blast trauma, with one woman reported to be in serious condition. The strikes damaged a five-story residential building and partially destroyed a private house. Russian forces carried out the assault using a combination of ground- and air-launched missiles, as well as attack drones. The use of such weaponry against civilian areas is a violation of international humanitarian law.

These events underscore the severe and ongoing threat to civilians from the conflict in Ukraine. City authorities are responding to the crisis by implementing measures to honor the dead and support the wounded. Attacks that damage critical infrastructure and cause civilian casualties continue to raise profound concern both nationally and internationally, as the protection of non-combatants must remain a paramount concern in any war.

The recent escalation of hostilities in Ukraine has raised alarms not only in Odesa but also across the nation. In light of the tragic events, it is essential to understand the broader implications of these attacks on urban centers.
