A severe cold front is set to sweep across Ukraine on January 16, 2023, bringing a sharp temperature drop to most of the country. This comes as part of a harsh winter season affecting Eastern Europe. Nationwide, temperatures are forecast to range from -13°C to -18°C, with overnight lows in some northern regions and Vinnytsia oblast plunging to between -20°C and -23°C.

During the day, most areas will see highs of -9°C to -14°C. In the south, southeast, and the Carpathian region, nighttime temperatures will be -8°C to -13°C, rising to -4°C to -9°C in the daytime. Zakarpattia will be the warmest region, with lows of -1°C to -6°C and daytime temperatures hovering around 0°C.

A predominantly northeastern wind is expected across Ukraine, with speeds of 7-12 m/s. In the capital, Kyiv, overnight lows will be -15°C to -17°C, with daytime highs of -11°C to -13°C. Meteorologists warn that frosts in the oblast could reach as low as -23°C.

Challenges Posed by the Deep Freeze

The impending cold snap presents significant challenges for Ukraine's population and infrastructure, which is already under strain. Authorities are urging preparedness for conditions that could impact energy supplies and daily life. Key preparedness measures include:

  • Ensuring reliable heating in residential buildings;
  • Maintaining adequate supplies of food and essentials.

Meteorologists are advising the public to exercise extreme caution when traveling or spending time outdoors during this period of intense cold.
