Teenager from Sumy Region Faces Charges for Defacing Kyiv War Memorial

Підліток з Сумщини став підозрюваним у вандалізмі на меморіалі жертв війни в Києві.

Vandalism Targets Memorial Sites

A 17-year-old resident of Sumy region has been charged with an administrative offense for defacing a memorial dedicated to a fallen soldier. The incident occurred in Kyiv, where the intoxicated teenager committed unlawful acts on the wall of a building housing a memorial. This memorial honored the son of a local resident who died defending Ukraine. Police identified the suspect using surveillance camera footage. Such memorials, often spontaneously created by communities, have become common across Ukraine since the full-scale invasion.

At the scene, flowers were broken and scattered, and the building's facade was soiled. Officers filed an administrative report under Article 173 of Ukraine's Code of Administrative Offenses (petty hooliganism). A court will decide on the punishment.

Other Acts of Vandalism

This case is not isolated. On January 17, 2026, an act of vandalism took place in central Rivne, where an unidentified woman damaged part of a portrait display of fallen Ukrainian defenders at the 'Price of Independence' memorial installation on Independence Square. Patrol police detained the perpetrator.

  • In Kozyatyn, Vinnytsia region, an unknown person overturned flower beds and scattered flowers near an Avenue of Memory.
  • In Ternopil region, a 16-year-old local resident climbed onto a monument to Hero of the Heavenly Hundred, Oleksandr Kapinos, and posted photos on social media. Law enforcement identified him and are resolving the issue of bringing him to administrative responsibility.

These incidents highlight the ongoing problem of vandalism targeting memorials dedicated to fallen heroes and underscore the need for enhanced oversight to maintain order in such areas. Authorities and the public must focus on preserving the memory of the fallen defenders, as this is a crucial part of the nation's identity and history.
