International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Each year on October 17, the world observes the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Poverty is defined as the lack of essential material and socio-economic resources needed to live a healthy and fulfilling life. This issue has long been examined by influential thinkers including Xenophon, Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Thomas More. The systematic study of poverty began during the industrial era in the 18th century.

The Societal Impact of Poverty

Rising poverty levels pose a serious threat to national security as they contribute to social instability and disorder. Poverty also leads to population decline and deteriorating public health. Moreover, it is closely linked to increases in alcoholism, drug addiction, and homelessness. The term "poverty" itself traces back to the Proto-Slavic word "bӗda," meaning misfortune or distress, highlighting its deep-rooted significance. Addressing poverty requires comprehensive attention and action across all sectors of society.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty aims to raise global awareness about poverty’s challenges and encourage coordinated efforts through international policies and programs. Given the extensive social and economic consequences of poverty, cooperation among governments, international organizations, and NGOs is crucial in developing effective solutions. Educating the public about these issues plays a vital role in mobilizing resources and support for the most vulnerable populations worldwide.
