Ukraine will receive 2 billion euros from the European Union for the development of drone technologies, which will be an important step in strengthening the country's defense capabilities amid the war. This was announced by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at a press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, reports "European Truth".
What the EU funds will go for in the drone initiative
The funds allocated by the European Commission will be directed towards increasing the production and improvement of unmanned aerial vehicles. According to von der Leyen, this will allow Ukraine to fully realize its technological potential and will also benefit the European defense industry. She noted:
"We have agreed with Ukraine that a total of 2 billion euros will be spent on unmanned aerial vehicles. This enables Ukraine to scale up and utilize its potential to the fullest".
Key objectives of the European Commission's allocation of 2 billion euros for drones for Ukraine
This initiative has several key objectives:
-
Enhancing Ukraine's military capability through modern technologies.
-
Developing the European defense industry through cooperation with Ukraine.
-
Strengthening security on the eastern flank of the EU.
In addition, the allocation of funds is part of a broader strategy to support Ukraine. At the beginning of September 2025, Ursula von der Leyen announced the provision of a 6 billion euro advance loan funded by profits from frozen Russian assets. These funds are also aimed at supporting drone production.
Recently, European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius called for the urgent creation of a "drone wall" on the eastern border of the EU after Russian drones violated Poland's airspace.
