Kyiv Man Faces Decade in Prison for Selling Methadone to Minor Who Later Died

Киянин може опинитися за ґратами на 10 років за продаж метадону неповнолітньому, який пізніше помер.

Indictment Filed Against 20-Year-Old Kyiv Resident

A 20-year-old man from Kyiv now faces up to ten years in prison and asset confiscation for selling methadone and potent pharmaceuticals to a minor, which resulted in the teenager's death. The incident occurred in the fall of 2025 in Kyiv's Pechersk district. The victim died from methadone poisoning compounded by the toxic effects of alcohol, diphenhydramine, and nicotine. This case highlights the severe legal consequences for drug trafficking in Ukraine, especially when it involves minors.

Investigators from the Pechersk police department have formally charged the suspect under specific articles of the Ukrainian Criminal Code. They have compiled a substantial body of evidence, concluded the pre-trial investigation, and forwarded the indictment to the court for further proceedings.

The Broader Drug Problem in Ukraine

This tragic case is part of a wider, systemic issue of drug-related crime in the country. In a separate but related development, the Solomianska District Prosecutor's Office in Kyiv has indicted six members of an organized criminal group. This group operated an amphetamine production lab, generating an estimated monthly revenue of around 20 million Ukrainian hryvnias.

In February 2025, law enforcement conducted a major nationwide operation, 'Rubicon,' executing over 500 searches across 21 Ukrainian regions. The operation dismantled four organized groups and a criminal organization specializing in the production and distribution of synthetic cathinones. The criminals had established a full illegal production cycle, from smuggling precursors from EU countries to synthesizing and selling the drugs. Police shut down 34 drug labs and 74 storage facilities, underscoring the scale of the narcotics problem. Ukraine's strategic location and ongoing challenges have made it a significant transit and production zone for synthetic drugs in Europe.

The drug situation in Ukraine remains critical, as evidenced by the numerous cases of criminal activity linked to drug manufacturing and sales. Cases like the one involving the 20-year-old underscore the importance of continued, aggressive action by law enforcement against organized crime and drug trafficking. The results of Operation 'Rubicon' demonstrate that authorities are taking measures to eliminate production sites and apprehend members of criminal groups, aiming to reduce the availability of drugs on the market.

This recent indictment is a stark reminder of the escalating drug crisis in Ukraine. In a related incident, authorities recently dismantled a significant drug production facility in Western Ukraine, where they seized a substantial quantity of amphetamine. These events illustrate the urgent need for comprehensive measures to combat drug trafficking and protect vulnerable populations.
