Ukrainians Returned from Captivity
In the initial phase of a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange, 205 Ukrainians have been brought back from Russian captivity. The returnees include soldiers from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service, most of whom had been held since 2022.
We celebrate every reunited family. My gratitude goes to everyone working to bring our people home.
Yuliia Svyrydenko, Prime Minister of Ukraine
This exchange marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to free Ukrainian citizens who were taken prisoner.
Part of a Broader Strategy
Prisoner swaps like this one are a key component of Ukraine’s wider strategy to secure the release of military personnel and civilians captured during hostilities. The process has drawn considerable public attention, as each release carries immense weight for families who have been anxiously awaiting their loved ones' return.
There has been a noticeable increase in information sharing between the two sides, which may indicate the potential for additional exchange phases in the future.
