Commemorating Vasyl Serhiienko on His 70th Birthday

April 23, 2023 marks what would have been the 70th birthday of Vasyl Mykolayovych Serhiienko, a posthumous Hero of Ukraine. Born on April 23, 1956, in the city of Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi, Cherkasy Oblast, Serhiienko worked as a journalist, sociologist, and prominent civic activist. He became a key figure during the Revolution of Dignity, Ukraine's 2013–2014 pro-European uprising.

Serhiienko gained recognition for his role in the protests in Kyiv, where he fought for the rights and freedoms of the Ukrainian people. He also organized popular assemblies in his hometown of Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi and was one of the founders of the Korsun Region Self-Defense group. Tragically, his life was cut short on April 4, 2014, when he was killed in the Vygraivskyi Forest; he was later buried in his native city. For his dedication and heroism, Serhiienko was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Heavenly Hundred and Hero of Ukraine.

Honoring His Legacy

The observance of Serhiienko's 70th birthday serves as a reminder of his vital contributions to the fight for democracy and human rights in Ukraine. His activism during the Revolution of Dignity left a lasting mark on the country's history, and his memory continues to inspire new generations of activists.

Paying tribute to heroes like Serhiienko is a crucial component of Ukraine's national identity and collective memory.
