Private Air Defense in Ukraine
Launched by the Ministry of Defense at the end of 2025, a new project has brought together 24 enterprises to form a private air defense network aimed at shielding facilities from drone strikes. This initiative operates as part of Ukraine's multi-layered air defense system, coordinated by the Air Command of the Ukrainian Air Force. The program marks a significant shift in how the country leverages civilian resources to bolster its defensive capabilities against aerial threats.
Participating companies are spread across several regions, including but not limited to:
- Kyiv
- Kharkiv
- Odesa
- Poltava
- Zakarpattia
- and others.
Each defense group consists of either civilian employees from the enterprises or members of paramilitary security services. These individuals undergo specialized training, receive official certifications and security clearances, and are authorized to deploy air defense tools in designated zones and at agreed times, subject to approval from military command.
Participation in these private air defense units does not grant additional draft deferments, and only those who are not subject to conscription during mobilization are recruited. This model helps ease the burden on state mobile fire teams, allowing them to focus on protecting critical infrastructure. In March 2025, several enemy drones were shot down in the Kharkiv region, demonstrating the project's real-world relevance and necessity for ensuring security in Ukraine.
Strengthening National Security
