Survey Reveals Widespread Antibiotic Misuse in the U.S.

A recent survey conducted in the United States found that 27.9% of adult Americans confessed to deliberately overstating their symptoms in order to secure prescriptions for antibiotics. Published in the journal JAMA Network Open, this study also highlights that some parents exaggerate their children's symptoms to obtain these medications. The findings draw attention to the significant dangers posed by the unnecessary use of antibiotics.

Between January and February 2026, researchers surveyed 959 U.S. adults, with 268 admitting to intentionally misrepresenting their health conditions. Of those who acknowledged this behavior, approximately 77% succeeded at least once in receiving an antibiotic prescription. The most commonly overstated or fabricated symptoms involved cold-related complaints such as:

  • cough
  • sore throat
  • fever

The Challenge of Antibiotic Overuse

In a related survey involving 236 parents and guardians, about 27% admitted to exaggerating or distorting their child's symptoms to get antibiotics prescribed. It is important to note that both surveys rely on self-reported data, which may not fully capture the extent of the issue nationwide.

Antibiotics are effective against bacterial infections but have no impact on viral illnesses like the common cold. Inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions can lead to harmful side effects and contribute to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance—a major public health concern. These study results emphasize the need for careful, informed use of antibiotics and greater patient awareness when it comes to their prescription.

The research underscores that antibiotic misuse in the U.S. is a serious issue requiring attention from healthcare professionals and society at large.

Educational initiatives that raise awareness about the consequences of unnecessary antibiotic use are crucial. Developing strategies to prevent antibiotic resistance, alongside improving patient knowledge, can help reduce symptom exaggeration and the associated risks to public health.

As the issue of antibiotic misuse continues to escalate, it is crucial to explore the broader implications of medication management in various health contexts. Recent findings indicate that the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may also play a significant role in enhancing treatment outcomes for patients facing serious conditions like cancer. Understanding how different medications impact patient health is essential for informed medical decisions.
