Honoring the Memory of a Ukrainian Hero
On April 29, 2023, Ukraine marks the 49th anniversary of the birth of Hero of Ukraine (posthumously) Hennadii Vasylovych Matuliak. A first-class military pilot and colonel in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he lost his life on February 25, 2022, while carrying out a combat mission near the urban-type settlement of Hostomel. This date serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by Ukrainian servicemen and women since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.
Hennadii Matuliak was born on April 29, 1977, in the village of Martynivske, now part of the Voznesensk district in Mykolaiv Oblast. From the very beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, he flew combat sorties, destroying columns of enemy equipment in the Kherson region. On the morning of February 25, 2022, he successfully completed his first combat mission of the day. He was on his second assignment when he was shot down near Hostomel, flying over settlements in the Vyshhorod district.
Hennadii Matuliak was laid to rest on April 16, 2022, in the city of Mykolaiv. Later that same year, he was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. His courage and dedication remain etched in the memory of the Ukrainian people.
