30th anniversary of the hryvnia in Ukraine

In September 2026, Ukraine will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the hryvnia into circulation. This date is associated with the monetary reform that was carried out in 1996 when a new currency was created in the country. To successfully implement the reform, it was necessary to prepare the banking system, ensure the exchange of karbovanets throughout the territory of the country, and conduct this exchange in an organized and timely manner.

As of today, the hryvnia has become an integral part of Ukraine's financial system. Over three decades, the country has established its own monetary system and gained the ability to conduct an independent monetary policy. The hryvnia has not only fulfilled the function of a means of circulation but has also become part of the personal history of millions of Ukrainians who have experienced various economic periods since its introduction.

The #my_first_hryvnia campaign

As part of the celebration of this important date, a campaign with the hashtag #my_first_hryvnia has been launched to draw attention to the significance of the hryvnia in citizens' lives. This is not only an opportunity to recall the first steps in the new currency but also a chance to discuss its role in modern Ukraine.

The celebration of the hryvnia's 30th anniversary emphasizes the importance of stability and development of Ukraine's financial system. During this time, the hryvnia has faced numerous challenges, including economic crises and global changes, which attest to its adaptability. The #my_first_hryvnia campaign could become a platform for citizens to share their stories and express their thoughts on the future of the national currency.

As the #my_first_hryvnia campaign gains momentum, many are reflecting on their early experiences with the currency. For instance, volunteer Tata Kepler shares her childhood memories of giving away her first hryvnias, illustrating how deeply intertwined the currency is with personal stories and community spirit.
