Commemorating Olha Bura's 40th Birthday
On July 22, 2023, Ukraine marks what would have been the 40th birthday of Olha Vasylivna Bura, a posthumous Hero of Ukraine and a participant in both the Revolution of Dignity and the Heavenly Hundred. Born Olha Lahodych on July 22, 1986, in the village of Ripniv—now part of the Zolochiv district in Lviv Oblast—she passed away on March 10, 2014, in Kyiv due to anaphylactic shock following the administration of a medical drug.
Life and Legacy of Olha Bura
Bura began her education at Ripniv Primary School in 1993 and completed nine grades at Novomylatyn Secondary School in 2002. She was classified as having a third-degree disability due to health issues. Starting November 24, 2013, she actively took part in the mass protests in Kyiv, and after December 1, 2013, she joined the "Morska Sotnia" (Sea Hundred) activist group on the Maidan. During these demonstrations, she assisted fellow protesters and sustained an injury to her arm.
In 2014, Olha Bura was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine for her courage and dedication during the turbulent events of the Revolution of Dignity. Her memory is honored across Ukraine, and she was laid to rest in her native village of Ripniv on March 13, 2014.
Remembering Olha Bura remains a vital part of modern Ukrainian history, as she has become a symbol of the bravery and resilience shown during the Revolution of Dignity. Her contributions to the fight for human rights and freedom in Ukraine continue to inspire new generations. The 40th anniversary of her birth prompts society to reflect on the events that shaped the nation's course and to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the struggle for dignity and justice.
