International Volunteer Day: Who Are Volunteers and How They Changed the World

День міжнародного волонтерства: Люди, які безкорисливо віддають себе на благо інших, залишають яскравий слід у нашому світі.

International Volunteer Day

On December 5, the world celebrates International Volunteer Day, which was established by the decision of the 40th session of the UN General Assembly on December 17, 1985. The word 'volunteer' comes from the French word volontaire (volunteer), which in turn comes from the Latin word voluntarius (free will, desire).

It is well known that volunteering is the voluntary work of individuals or groups who give their time and effort selflessly to help others, society, or even the state. The history of volunteering dates back to ancient times when people united to solve common problems in their community. In the Middle Ages, churches and religious organizations often provided aid to the poor and sick.

Volunteering in social spheres, medical institutions, environmental projects, and other fields is extremely important for ensuring harmony in society and improving the quality of life for citizens.

People are making the world kinder together, and volunteers are tireless heroes who care about the well-being of others. May this day remind us of the importance of volunteer activities and dedication to the welfare of others.
