Ukraine to Implement Hourly Power Cuts from February 6, 2026, Following Infrastructure Attacks

В Україні запровадять погодинні відключення електроенергії з 6 лютого 2026 року через удари по інфраструктурі.

Ukraine Announces Scheduled Power Outages

Starting February 6, 2026, Ukraine will introduce scheduled hourly electricity blackouts and power restrictions for industrial consumers. This measure is a direct response to the severe damage inflicted on the country's energy infrastructure by Russian missile and drone strikes. A key facility, the Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant in Kyiv, was forced to halt operations after sustaining critical damage in an overnight attack on February 3.

Critical Infrastructure Damage and Protection Plans

The Darnytsia plant was vital, providing heating for hundreds of thousands of Kyiv residents, including homes, hospitals, and schools. This ongoing energy crisis, a direct consequence of the war, has forced the government to mandate new protective measures. Regional and city authorities are now required to submit detailed plans by September 1 to better shield energy infrastructure and enhance its resilience against future attacks.

Information regarding the timing and extent of the power cuts will be published on the official websites of regional power distribution companies (oblenergos). Consumers are urged to use electricity sparingly during the hours it is available according to the schedule.

"The situation in the energy system is subject to change," a statement from Ukrenergo noted.

The implementation of scheduled outages is a necessary step to manage a critical shortage in Ukraine's power grid, aiming to conserve resources and maintain stable supply for essential social institutions. A core component of the national strategy involves planning robust infrastructure protection to mitigate the risks posed by such targeted assaults in the future.
