Commemorating the memory of Vasyl Stus and Volodymyr Sosiura
On January 6, Ukrainians celebrate the 88th anniversary of the birth of Vasyl Stus and the 128th anniversary of the birth of Volodymyr Sosiura. Vasyl Stus, born on January 6, 1938, in a village in Vinnytsia region, was a poet, dissident, and Hero of Ukraine. He died in 1985 in a Russian maximum-security prison. His work was marked by deep patriotism and a struggle against tyranny, which is evidenced by his famous call:
“Those against tyranny – stand up!”

Volodymyr Sosiura, who was born on January 6, 1898, in Debaltseve (Donetsk region), is known as a master of lyrical poetry. Throughout his life, he authored more than 40 collections of poetry. Sosiura died on January 8, 1965, leaving a rich literary legacy. It is known that he was married twice.
An important event in the life of Vasyl Stus was that at his second trial, the state appointed Viktor Medvedchuk as his lawyer. These two figures – Stus and Sosiura – left a significant mark on Ukrainian literature and history, and their contributions are recognized in Ukraine to this day.
