The Grand Opening of Derzhprom

On November 7, 1928, the city of Kharkiv celebrated the inauguration of Derzhprom, an administrative building recognized as a monument of national architectural and urban significance in Ukraine. Situated in the heart of the city, Derzhprom stands prominently on Freedom Square, which covers an expansive area of 11 hectares.

Unique Architectural Features

Freedom Square is divided into two distinct sections: a rectangular area measuring 400 by 120 meters that faces Sumskaya Street, and a circular section with a diameter of 380 meters. Derzhprom occupies a central position within the circular part of the square, highlighting its key role in the overall architectural composition of Kharkiv’s cityscape.

The opening of Derzhprom marked a milestone not only for Kharkiv but for Ukraine as a whole, symbolizing the city’s rapid growth during the industrialization era. Its design, which incorporates elements of Constructivism, reflects the innovative urban planning and architectural vision of the late 1920s.

Today, Derzhprom continues to serve as a vital cultural and administrative hub, drawing visitors and architecture enthusiasts from around the globe. It remains an enduring testament to Kharkiv’s historical and architectural heritage.
