April 8th: Observances and Historical Significance

In Ukraine, April 8th is marked as the Day of Military Commissariat Workers. It also coincides with International Romani Day, established in 1990 at the World Romani Congress in Poland. For the Orthodox Church, this date honors the memory of several apostles from the group of Seventy, including Herodion, Agabus, Rufus, Asyncritus, Phlegon, and Hermas. In the folk calendar, the day was known as Herodion the Ice-Breaker.

This date holds significance far beyond Ukraine's borders. In 217 AD, a coup was launched against Roman Emperor Caracalla, led by the Praetorian Prefect Opellius Macrinus. In 1093, monks in the Kingdom of England, under Walkelin, moved into a new temple—Winchester Cathedral. In 1139, Roger II, the founder and first King of the Kingdom of Sicily, was excommunicated from the Church.
