Восьмирічний хлопчик з України став одним з фіналістів міжнародного поетичного конкурсу від ЮНІСЕФ.

Yaroslav Antontsev: A UNICEF Contest Finalist

An eight-year-old Ukrainian schoolboy, Yaroslav Antontsev, has been selected as a finalist in the nationwide UNICEF 'Poetry for Peace' contest. His poem has been included in an anthology featuring the work of Ukrainian children writing about the war in their country. The 'Poetry for Peace' initiative, now in its sixth year, has received over 9,000 poem submissions from children across Ukraine. This project provides a vital creative outlet for young people processing the trauma of conflict.

Yaroslav, a second-grader, was encouraged in his creative efforts by his mother, Olha Lebedieva. 'I tell him about different competitions, and he chooses which ones he wants to enter. I introduced him to this project, and he said, 'Let's try.' This is his first poem; before this, he wrote a fairy tale,' Olha noted.

Yaroslav spent about a month developing his poem, with the final text written over two days.

The Significance of the Achievement

Last week, Olha Lebedieva received an email confirming Yaroslav's place as a finalist in the 'Poetry for Peace' contest. 'My son was surprised, but he was very pleased. We read the letter together and looked at the diploma from UNICEF,' the boy's mother recounted.

Yaroslav's father has been defending Ukraine since 2022, which adds profound personal resonance to the boy's poetic achievement during this difficult period for his family.

The contest not only highlights the creative potential of children but also serves as a poignant record of their experiences and emotions during wartime. The anthology containing Yaroslav's work will stand as an important historical document, capturing the thoughts and feelings of a new generation of Ukrainians.

Family support and participation in initiatives like this can be crucial for a child's development, encouraging them to articulate their thoughts and feelings through the power of art.
