New York residents are ready to leave the city because of the new mayor

According to recent data from J.L. Partners, about 800 thousand residents of New York plan to leave the city due to the victory of the Democratic politician Zogran Mamdani. This accounts for approximately 9% of the city's total population, while an additional 25% are considering leaving, which is estimated at 2.12 million people. Particularly high demand for departure has been seen among Staten Island residents.

Respondents who are ready to leave believe that Mamdani's victory will lead to 'catastrophe' and 'hell' in the city.

Sociologist James Johnson emphasized that even if only half of these 800 thousand leave, it could seriously impact the city's economy. It is worth noting that the recent mayoral election had the highest turnout since 1969, with Zogran Mamdani emerging as the winner, officially becoming the mayor of New York on January 1, 2026.

Plans and views of the new mayor

Zogran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, will become the youngest mayor of New York in over a century, the first Muslim in this position, and the first mayor born in Africa. His campaign promises included issues of affordable housing, free public transport, urban grocery stores, rent price freezes, and other social initiatives.

During his speech to voters, Mamdani criticized his opponent Andrew Cuomo and did not overlook President Donald Trump.

The emergence of the new mayor in New York has sparked discussions and debates about potential changes in the city's life and residents' reactions to the new political situation. In particular, many planning to leave are reassessing their views on life in New York and possible prospects under new leadership.
