Private Sector Joins Ukraine’s Air Defense Network
By mid-September, 81 companies had joined Ukraine’s experimental private air defense initiative. The Ministry of Defense has officially authorized these firms to participate in air defense operations. In total, 92 enterprises from various industries and ownership types applied to be part of this project.
Launched at the end of 2025 by the Ministry of Defense, this private air defense program forms an integral layer of Ukraine’s comprehensive multi-tiered aerial protection system. These private defense groups operate under the command of the Air Forces’ Air Command and do not function independently. Critical infrastructure companies are now able to establish their own air defense teams, receiving temporary arms, as well as training and certification to ensure preparedness.
Notable Achievements of the Private Air Defense Forces
The first private air defense unit has already completed combat missions, successfully shooting down several Russian drones in the Kharkiv region. On April 17, this group recorded its first kill of a fast-moving Shahed-type jet drone traveling at speeds exceeding 400 km/h. This milestone highlights the private sector’s active role in securing Ukraine’s airspace.
Integrating private businesses into the air defense system underscores the critical cooperation between government agencies and the commercial sector in safeguarding national security.
