Vasyl Zaichenko’s Journey Out of Kherson Region
At 84 years old, Vasyl Zaichenko managed to walk approximately six kilometers to leave a dangerous area in Kherson after enduring nearly six months of isolation caused by Russian shelling. Having lived in Kherson for 60 years, he chose to remain in the city voluntarily, surviving on the vegetables he grew in his garden. Reflecting on his experience, Vasyl shared:
'The shelling intensified, and there was no heating. During winter, the temperature hovered around +8 °C. Everyone else evacuated, but I stayed by choice.' Vasyl Zaichenko
Due to the ongoing attacks, regular aid deliveries were impossible, so humanitarian supplies were sent to Vasyl via drones. After his evacuation, volunteers met him and provided assistance for the next steps of his journey. From a transit center, his daughter and grandson picked him up, marking a significant moment in his life. Vasyl now plans to live with his family in Nikopol, located in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
Urgent Call for Evacuation
The Kherson City Military Administration emphasized the critical need for early evacuation from hazardous zones, urging residents to leave while they still can. Officials stated:
'We urge residents of Kherson’s dangerous areas to evacuate promptly, while the opportunity remains.' Kherson City Military Administration
On November 22, 2026, Vasyl Zaichenko will celebrate his 85th birthday. His upcoming chapter in Nikopol alongside his family promises a safer and more peaceful life than the perilous months he endured in the conflict zone.
