Trump Administration Dismisses Human Rights Watch Report Documenting Backsliding

Управління Трампа відхиляє звіт правозахисників про погіршення ситуації з правами людини.

Human Rights Watch Report Draws Criticism

The Trump administration has rejected the findings of a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report detailing a regression in human rights during Donald Trump's presidency. The 536-page document outlines specific issues that emerged in this area. Among its proposals, the report suggests forming an alliance of democracies, which could include nations such as the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Australia, Brazil, and South Africa.

In a sharp rebuke of the annual HRW report, the Trump administration accused the organization of demonstrating bias against the sitting president. Specifically, Anna Kelly noted that HRW began attacking Trump even before his inauguration. In response to the report, Philip Bolopion emphasized that the administration is effectively undermining the system of checks and balances fundamental to American democracy. This exchange highlights the ongoing tension between the U.S. government and international human rights monitors.

Incidents and Immigration Policy

The report also references an incident on January 22, when the U.S. Department of Homeland Security initiated a special operation called 'Catch of the Day' in the state of Maine. During this operation, an immigration service agent shot and killed 37-year-old U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Goode, and a nurse named Alex Pretty was also killed. Commenting on this incident, Donald Trump called it unfortunate.

Simultaneously, approval for Trump's immigration policy has fallen to its lowest level since his return to the White House. Among other problems raised in the report are:

  • the deployment of the National Guard for policing in cities;
  • the aggressive activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE);
  • the U.S. retreat from a rules-based world order.

The Human Rights Watch report reflects serious concerns about the state of human rights in the U.S. during Donald Trump's presidency, which could impact the country's international image. Furthermore, the administration's response to these accusations indicates heightened tension between the government and human rights organizations, potentially deepening societal divisions. With declining support for immigration policy and escalating internal conflicts, monitoring further developments in this area remains crucial.
