Introducing the Digit 5 Humanoid Robot
Agility Robotics has revealed its latest humanoid robot, Digit 5, standing 1.88 meters tall and weighing 129 kilograms. Designed specifically for warehouse logistics, this model boasts numerous improvements over its predecessors. Digit 5 can repeatedly lift loads up to 22 kilograms, with a payload capacity increased by 40%, enabling it to handle items weighing as much as 50 pounds.
The robot’s leg design has been significantly enhanced, extending its reach from 1.67 meters to 2.1 meters. Its battery delivers 90 minutes of operation on a single charge and can recharge in just nine minutes. This allows Digit 5 to remain active for over 20 hours daily with routine top-ups. Equipped with 30 motors controlled nearly 1,000 times per second, the robot exhibits highly responsive and agile movements.
Safety Features and System Integration
Digit 5 incorporates several safety mechanisms, including a charging port, safety display, emergency stop button, and rear-facing camera. It uses cameras, depth sensors, and inertial measurement units to detect nearby people. The robot can squat, kneel, and sit, with legs that bend in a human-like manner. It complies with OSHA industrial safety standards, and Agility Robotics actively participates in setting humanoid robot safety regulations in the US, Canada, and through ISO.
Developed in Salem, Oregon, Digit 5 is intended to collaborate with human workers in warehouses and manufacturing environments. Its ISO-standard grippers are interchangeable with other tools, such as claw-like hands. Agility Arc software ensures smooth integration of Digit into warehouse and production systems. Early access to Digit 5 is planned for early 2027, with wider availability expected later that year.
Earlier in 2023, Agility Robotics enhanced the Digit platform by integrating a large language model (LLM), improving the robot’s ability to comprehend complex human commands. The primary goal of Digit’s development is to alleviate the physical strain on warehouse employees, making it a valuable asset in modern logistics and manufacturing operations.
