Production of AIRO's Long-Range RQ-70 Drone Set to Begin in 2027

New RQ-70 Drone Unveiled

On June 19 at 5:00 PM, AIRO announced its new long-range unmanned aerial vehicle, the RQ-70, designed for surveillance beyond the tactical frontline. Full-scale manufacturing of the RQ-70 is slated to start in January 2027. This drone builds on the proven track record of its predecessor, the RQ-35 Heidrun, which has been deployed by NATO member states and allied forces. The announcement highlights AIRO's continued push to meet evolving military reconnaissance needs.

Key Features of the RQ-70

The RQ-70 features standard hand-launch and deep-stall landing capabilities, along with onboard artificial intelligence. The platform comes in several variants, including:

  • standard;
  • long-range;
  • vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) support.

Its autonomous flight time reaches up to 8 hours, with an operational range exceeding 62 miles (100 km). The drone also maintains resilience in GPS-denied environments and can be operated by a single person.

Dr. Chirindjiv Katuria, Executive Chairman of AIRO, stressed the critical need for speed in collecting, processing, and transmitting intelligence data. He noted that “modern conflicts have shown that success depends on a multitude of factors,” adding that “the RQ-70 is designed to address this challenge by providing long-term, persistent surveillance.”

Earlier in June, German arms manufacturer Diehl Defence introduced a new drone-based air defense system called the Cobra 600. This platform combines a jet-powered drone with a single-rail launcher carrying one IRIS-T missile. Such developments underscore how unmanned technologies are increasingly being integrated into military operations, offering fresh solutions to contemporary threats.

The RQ-70 announcement highlights the growing importance of drone technology in modern military strategy, particularly regarding the demand for greater autonomy and reconnaissance efficiency.
