Ukrainian military personnel have managed to optimize the use of expensive missiles for the MIM-104 Patriot air defense system. Now, ballistic targets can be destroyed with one interceptor, whereas previously several missiles were used for this purpose. According to Militarnyi, this is the case.
Patriot Ukraine Air Defense: How Missile Costs Were Reduced
According to the commander of the Air Force unit, the crews consciously strive to minimize the use of munitions without losing effectiveness.
He noted:
“We are trying to use as few missiles as possible. Even if the rules provide for 2–4 missiles, we destroy the target with one.”
Previously, to guarantee the interception of complex targets, including ballistic missiles, the standard was to simultaneously employ several interceptors.
In practice, this means:
-
reducing the expenditure of expensive missiles
-
increasing the efficiency of the crews
-
the ability to maintain the combat readiness of air defense for longer.
Patriot Missiles in Ukraine's Air Defense: What We Know About the System
Various types of missiles are in service, including PAC-2 and PAC-3, capable of intercepting both aerodynamic and ballistic targets.
The Patriot air defense system remains one of the key elements of Ukraine's air defense, especially for countering missiles of the “Iskander” type.
At the same time, Russia continues to ramp up the production of ballistic missiles, particularly by importing components through intermediaries.
This increases the pressure on the Ukrainian air defense system, making optimization of missile usage critically important for preserving resources and effectively protecting the sky.
Recall that political scientist Yuriy Romanenko expressed the opinion in his monologue about the need for Ukraine to seek partners to overcome the deficit of air defense systems. He named Japan, which produces interceptor missiles for Patriot systems, as one of the potential partners.
