Religious Holidays and Their History

Memorial Day of the Holy Martyrs Eustratius, Eugenia, Axentius, Mardarius, Orestes

The holy martyrs lived in the early IV century in Sebaste during the time when Emperor Diocletian was conducting brutal persecutions against Christians. Their suffering and death served as a powerful example of resilience. Axentius, a presbyter, was arrested first, and his faith inspired others. Eustratius, a military leader, openly acknowledged himself as a Christian. Mardarius, a simple peasant, joined the martyrs, while Eugenia and Orestes, soldiers, refused to offer sacrifices to idols.

All five martyrs were subjected to cruel tortures and met their deaths in various ways, becoming an example of sacrifice for their beliefs.

Prayers of the Day

O, holy martyrs, passion-bearers of Christ Eustratius, Eugenia, Axentius, Mardarius, and Orestes! You who have powerfully suffered for our faith, do not leave us in our sorrows. We ask you: pray to God for us, sinners, grant us strength of spirit that we may withstand temptations and enemies. May your martyrdom be an example of resilience and purity of faith for us.

Amen

Folk Beliefs and Signs

Our ancestors believed that the signs of this day could predict what the weather would be like in the future. For example, windy weather on Eustratius promised a harsh winter, a clear day - a clear January, cloudy - a gloomy January, and heavy frost - a bountiful summer. This day was considered unfavorable for new beginnings and endeavors.

The holiday on December 13 is dedicated to the memory of five great martyrs who gave their lives for faith. Their courage and fidelity to Christ are seen as an example for every Christian. The prayers and memory of these saints are preserved in the hearts of believers and help true believers withstand life's trials.
