Starting from March 5, 2026, Poland has changed the rules for Ukrainians' access to public healthcare. Now, free treatment is available only for limited categories, while the previous preferential regulations have become void. This is reported by “inPoland”.
According to the National Health Fund of Poland, the new rules apply to Ukrainians with UKR status and a PESEL number.
Free healthcare in Poland 2026: who is entitled
According to the updated regulations, the right to free primary medical care and reimbursed medications is available only to four categories:
children and adolescents up to 18 years old
pregnant women and women after childbirth
people affected by violence
Ukrainians residing in collective accommodation centers.
For other Ukrainian citizens, access to free medical services is significantly restricted.

Medical services in Poland: what is no longer covered
Even for defined categories, the list of available services has been shortened. Specifically, free access is no longer provided to:
sanatorium treatment
preventive programs
infertility treatment
complex surgeries, including joint replacements
specialized state programs.
At the same time, the right to emergency care remains for all Ukrainians under temporary protection status, if there is a threat to life or health.
Full access to the healthcare system is only possible with health insurance. This can be obtained through official employment, running a business, or voluntary contributions.
